Have you read Kelly Link's "Travels With the Snow Queen"? Might fit in quite nicely here. (Available in Stranger Things Happen, which you can download for free.)

I am a HUGE fan of Patricia A. McKillip. She is one of the most skilled at the use of language of the authors that I adore. This is one I haven’t read yet but recently picked up a like-new used hardback and look forward to getting to it really soon.
